STEUART, GEORGE #
- Born: 1730c Died: 1806
Scottish architect, working in London, for whom see Howard Colvin, A Biographical dictionary of British architects 1600-1840 (4th edn., 2008), 982-3. Between 1779 and 1781 Steuart was employed by James Hamilton, eighth Earl of Abercorn, to design a house at Baronscourt, Co. Tyrone,.(1) The house was remodelled by JOHN SOANE in 1790 and subsequently burnt out, to be reconstructed later by RICHARD MORRISON and WILLIAM VITRUVIUS MORRISON.

|Nature:||New 5-bay, 3-storey house for James Hamilton, 8th Earl of Abercorn, with 3-bay loggia of coupled Tuscan columns and shallow pediment. Cost: £8,015.8s.7½d. 'This new house is all of hewn white stone not very large but very convenient and well finished' (Beaufort).
