Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

'Architect', of Bandon, Co. Cork. In a footnote to a review of Mulvany's Life of James Gandon in The Builder of 2 January 1847,(1) the writer quotes a testimonial written some fifty years earlier in favour of Benjamin Shorter, 'architect', of Bandon, as an example of the loose way in which the term was employed in Ireland at that time. From the testimonial it is clear that Shorter was a workman rather than an architect.
