Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of Dublin. George Patrick Sheridan, who was born at Larchfield, Dundrum., Co. Dublin, in 1865, was a son of Peter Sheridan, owner of a carpet and bedding warehouse in Parliament Street.(1) His family subsequently moved to Granby Row in the centre of Dublin, and Sheridan was educated at the Carmelite Academy in Dominick Street,(2) before becoming apprenticed to JAMES HARGRAVE BRIDGFORD  JAMES HARGRAVE BRIDGFORD on 1 January 1880.(3) He later recalled that Bridgford's assistant, THOMAS EDWARD HUDMAN  THOMAS EDWARD HUDMAN had been particularly helpful to him at this time.(4) When he had completed his pupilage, he worked for three years as an assistant to WILLIAM HAGUE WILLIAM HAGUE , who was then engaged on the cathedrals at Monaghan and Letterkenny, and also gained experience in the offices of JOHN JOSEPH O'CALLAGHAN JOHN JOSEPH O'CALLAGHAN , WALTER GLYNN DOOLIN  WALTER GLYNN DOOLIN and CHARLES GEOGHEGAN.  CHARLES GEOGHEGAN.

At this point Sheridan's eyesight and general health began to suffer from the close work in which he was involved. A break from office work became necessary, and he found an appointment as clerk of works to the Irish Lights Board, superintending the erection of houses in the west of Ireland. After a few years in this position he went to London in 1892 with the aim of qualifying as an associate of the RIBA. In London he worked in the offices of Frederick George Knight, Frederick Richard Farrow, William Warlow Gwyther, and Thomas Wilson Aldwinckle and pursued his studies at Architectural Association, taking the opportunity to join the Assocation's annual visits abroad.(5) He was a keen practitioner and advocate of the value of sketching, which 'trains the eye in proportion and judgment, concentrates the attention on detail, and assists the mind in understanding and recording the effects produced in deceased architecture'.(6) He was elected an associate of the RIBA in 1894, after which 'professional prospects became so rosy that he contemplated establishing a practice in London'.(7) He was still in London in the spring of 1895. However the opportunity of forming a partnership with FREDERICK MORLEY  FREDERICK MORLEY arose in Dublin, which caused him to return to Ireland later that year or early in 1896.(8) After Morley's death in the autumn of 1896, Sheridan carried on the practice, initially under the name of MORLEY & MORLEY & amp; SHERIDAN SHERIDAN . He practised alone for many years until taking his nephew Liam P. Tierney into partnership in 1945.

Sheridan died on in his eighty-seventh year on 24 July 1950. There is no indication in any of the biographies and obituaries that he was married. In an appreciation which follows the obituary in the Journal of the RIBA, his old friend HARRY ALLBERRY  HARRY ALLBERRY recalled him fondly: 'He will not be remembered as one of the architectural galaxy, nor would he have wished it, for he regarded his profession not as a source of money-spinning but rather as a pleasant occupation at which, as he described it, "he loved to potter". Nevertheless, or because of this attitude, his work - mainly domestic - has a delightful freshness which might be expected from a man of Sheridan's outlook and character.' After reminding his readers that Sheridan could also be 'intensely practical', instancing the key role he played in securing new premises for the RIAI at No. 8 Merrion Square during his period of office as president, Allberry remembered how 'his advent at the Institute's debates and social functions was always happily acclaimed with "Here's G.P.", when the atmosphere seemed immediately to brighten'. In Allberry's view no other architect in Ireland had been 'held in greater esteem and affection by his colleagues'.

According to Allberry, Sheridan's work was 'mainly domestic'. This domestic work appears to have been chiefly for private clients, although in 1920 he was appointed architect for public housing scheme in Wicklow.(9) Most of the works recorded in the Irish Builder are commercial buildings.

Sheridan was active in the affairs of his profession, serving as president of both the AAI and the RIAI. In 1907 the Lord Lieutenant appointed him a member of the three-man commission which reported on the condition of St John's Bridge, Kilkenny.(10) He was chairman of the company which produced the Irish Architect & Craftsman, a short-lived periodical which was wound up in 1912.(11) In 1925 he was appointed examiner in architecture by the National University of Ireland(12) and he subsquently acted as assessor for several architectural competitions and prizes.(13) His pupils and assistants included HAROLD G. LEASK HAROLD G. LEASK , GEORGE G. LYNES GEORGE G. LYNES , FREDERICK LOUIS MORLEY FREDERICK LOUIS MORLEY , DOMINIC MARY O'CONNOR  DOMINIC MARY O'CONNOR (probably) and EDWARD RONAN SHERIDAN. EDWARD RONAN SHERIDAN.

(8) According to the obituary in RIAI Year Book, Sheridan 'took over the practice of Frederick Morley' in the autumn of 1895,; if this is so, it was too late for inclusion in Thom's Directory for 1896 which lists Frederick Morley & Son, architects, surveyors, & civil engineers but does not include Sheridan. Other circumstantial evidence suggests that Sheridan may not have returned to Dublin until 1896.
