Engineer to the Belfast Harbour Commissioners, 1871-1892. Thomas Ross Salmond, who was born in Scotland in 1828, came to Belfast in 1871 from Scotland, where he had been chief assistant engineer to the Clyde Navigation Trust. During the twenty one years he held the post of harbour engineer, some major works were carried out, including the renewal and extension of Albert Quay, the reconstruction of Queen's Quay, the rebuilding of Donegall Quay, and the construction of the Alexandra Graving Dock. He retired in 1892, when he was succeeded by GEORGE FREDERICK LEE GILES GEORGE FREDERICK LEE GILES . He died at home in Belfast in 1917. He was a widower for some years before his death. A married daughter, Mary Hamilton, and her three children were living with him at the time of the 1911 census.
