Selected: BERGIN, FRANCIS
| Born: 1855 |
| Died: 1925 |
Engineer and architect, of Kildare. Francis Bergin was born in Kildare on 21 November 1855 and was educated at Tullabeg College, Co. Tipperary, and Trinity College, Dublin, where, after graduating in Arts, he received the degree of BAI in 1879. In December 1880 he left Ireland for New South Wales, where he spent seven years as an engineer on the government railways. He was accompanied by his wife, Nancy, and his two-month-old son, Charles. Two daughters, Alice and May, were born in Australia. After his return to Ireland in 1887 he was appointed resident engineer on the River Barrow surveys, a post which he held until 1890. From 1890 until 1893 he was engineer to the Grand Canal Company.(1) Although certified by the Civil Service Commissioners as competent to perform the duties of county surveyor, he never actually held a surveyorship(2) but was engineer to the Naas Union Rural District Councils from about 1894 until his death and was elected assistant surveyor for Co. Kildare in 1900.(2) He was town surveyor for Kildare in 1901.(3) He designed water and sewerage works for several towns in Ireland and acted as consulting engineer to Limerick Corporation for the extension of the city waterworks in 1906. He was retained by Dublin Corporation as consulting engineer for the reservoir at Roundwood in about 1908. In 1913 he was one of three candidates for the position of borough surveyor and engineer to the waterworks for Dublin Corporation but was ruled ineligible as he was not an officer of the Council.(4) His pupils and assistants included JEREMIAH THOMAS MURPHY and GEORGE JOSEPH STANISLAUS KELLY.
Bergin died at his house, Beechgrove, Kildare, on 27 October 1925. His first wife, Nancy, who had two more daughters after the family returned to Ireland, died while her children were still young. Bergin then married his daughters' governess, who gave birth to two more sons and a daughter.
The Irish Architectural Archive holds drawings by Bergin for the latrines in Edenderry Female National Schools and for a house at Kildare for a Mr Cuthbert, in the Carberry Collection, Acc. 85/200.17/1 and 23/1.
