Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of London, for whom see Directory of British Architects 1834-1914 (RIBA 2001), II, 394. Horatio (or Horace) Porter, who was born in London on 22 June 1861,(1) was the son and pupil of FREDERICK WILLIAM PORTER FREDERICK WILLIAM PORTER , whom he succeeded as Surveyor to the Clothworkers' Company. He was also architect to the Sun & Patriotic Insurance Company and designed a new office for the company in College Green, Dublin, in 1908.(2) The Irish Builder, despite a tendency in this period to comment adversely on new buildings in Dublin by British architects, considered Porter's office to be 'quite one of the best contributions to the street architecture of Dublin during recent years' with a 'quiet and restrained use made of the classical tradition that is specially appropriate to Dublin'.(3) Porter also designed proposed alterations to the Sun and Patriotic's old premises in Trinity Street in 1912.(4)   Porter was Mayor of Holborn from 1911 to 1912 and died in London on 29 July 1918.
