Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect and 'CE', of Loughrea and Gort, Co. Galway. Francis Persse, the sixth son of Dudley Persse of Roxborough, Co. Galway, by his second wife, Frances, daughter of Col. Richard Barry of Castle Cor, Co. Cork, was born on 26 April 1854, two years after his youngest sister, the dramatist Augusta, Lady Gregory.  After attending Trinity College, Dublin from 1872 until 1875, he served a four-year pupilage with the engineer George Fosbery Lyster of Liverpool. On completing his pupilage, he joined the staff of the Irish Board of Public Works as an inspector of buildings. A few years later he decided to qualify as an architect in London. In 1887 he worked in the office of ARTHUR WILLIAM BLOMFIELD  ARTHUR WILLIAM BLOMFIELD and in 1888 attended the London College of Architecture for eight months. He passed the RIBA qualifying examination in 1889 and set up as an architect in Loughrea, Co. Galway, the same year.

Persse was appointed a justice of the peace for Co. Galway, in 1891.(1) He was still living in the county in 1911, describing hiomself on his census return as a justice of the peace and land agent, but by 1915 had moved to England.(2) He died in March 1928. He was married  twice: first  in 1880 to Mary (d. 1909), daughter of William Monahan, of Templemartin, Co. Galway, by whom he was the father of two sons, both killed in the First World War, and four daughters, and second in 1910 to Rose, a twenty-one-year-old from Dublin.

RIBA: elected associate, 3 June 1889, having been proposed by A.H. Tiltman, C.L. Eastlake and ARTHUR WILLIAM BLOMFIELD ARTHUR WILLIAM BLOMFIELD ; membership lapsed, 1914.
