Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of Dublin. Alfred Gresham Jones, who was born circa 1824, was a son of George Jones, merchant tailor of Dublin, and his wife Sarah.(1) He entered the Royal Dublin Society's School of Architectural Drawing on 10 November 1842 and was awarded a premium on 29 June 1843 and another on 7 November 1844.(2) He then appears to have spent some time in London; in 1850, when he exhibited designs for an Early English church at the Royal Hibernian Academy,(3) he gave 16 Dawson Street Dublin (where George Jones had his tailoring premises) and 10 Grafton Place, Kentish Town, London, as his addresses. In 1852 he appears to have been working for JOHN SKIPTON MULVANY JOHN SKIPTON MULVANY ; he attested the death of Mulvany's wife in July 1852,(4) and three of the four designs which Mulvany exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1853 were drawn by him. He makes his first appearance in Thom's Directory in 1853, working from George Jones's house at 7 Garville Avenue, Rathgar. The following year he formed a partnership with HUGH CARMICHAEL  HUGH CARMICHAEL which lasted until Carmichael's death in 1860. Thereafter he practised on his own, although at some stage he is said to have invited RICHARD O'BRIEN SMYTH  RICHARD O'BRIEN SMYTH to become his partner. His pupils and assistants included GEORGE PALMER BEATER GEORGE PALMER BEATER , THOMAS PHILLIPS FIGGIS  THOMAS PHILLIPS FIGGIS and WILLIAM H. MACKENZIE WILLIAM H. MACKENZIE . He was one of the Blackrock Township Commissioners, representing Monkstown ward, in 1874 and 1875.(5) In Monkstown he appears to have been involved in the residential development at Queen's Park, where he designed villas named the Cottage (later Villa Carlotta ) in 1870 and Verona in 1873(6) and where he lived himself from 1869 to 1872 and again from 1886 to 1888.   Intermittent notices in the Irish Times between 22 October 1874 and 15 September 1875 name him as architect to the Vieille Montagne Italian zinc roofing company.

In 1888, Jones emigrated to Australia. By this time he was already in his mid-sixties, and the reason for this enterprising move is not clear.  He is said to have started a successful practice in Australia.(7) He also wrote verse.(8) He died, aged ninety-one, at his house at St Kilda, Melbourne, on 9 September 1913 (9) and was buried at Boroondara Cemetery, Melbourne. He had married Julia Charlotte Malyn on 27 January 1855 (10) when he was thirty-one and had two sons and five daughters, of whom one son and three daughters survived him.

The Irish Architectural Archive holds a watercolour reconstruction of the Parthenon by Jones, for which he was awarded a Silver Medal by the Royal Dublin Society in 1843 or 1844 (Acc. 2001/143)(11) and designs by him for The Cottage and Verona in Queen's Park, Monkstown (see above).

(1) The name Gresham may indicate some connection with Thomas M. Gresham, who established the Gresham Hotel in 1817. As Gresham was a foundling from London, the connection between him and Jones's parents may have been through marriage or simple friendship. Both Gresham and Alfred Jones may have been Methodists.
