O'NEILL, GEORGE GORDON

Architect, of Bangor, Co. Down, and Chelmsford, Essex. According to the 1911 census returns, George Gordon O'Neill, was born in Co. Limerick in 1888, the son of George Thomas O'Neill, an agent in the printing business, and his wife, Helen. By 1907 his family had moved to Bangor, and he had become a pupil of WILLIAM JOHN WATERMAN ROOME. (1) He is described as 'Architect civil service finance act' in the 1911 census returns. By 1917 he had established his own practice in Bangor. Later he had an office in Belfast. He remained in Northern Ireland until the early 1930s, but by 1937 had moved to Chelmsford, Essex,(2) where he established an office. After the Second World War he took George Robert Fordham into partnership, practising as O'Neill & Fordham.(3) He died in 1981. A file of his letters to J.H. Craig about the repair and construction of various properties, 1921-1935, is in PRONI, D3413/A/G/19.
