Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Engineer and architect, of Clonakilty, Co. Cork. James O'Crowley, son of James Crowley, farmer, was born circa 1887.   He studied at the Cork School of Art, winning a first-class certificate in modelling from the Antique in 1904 and another in drawing the Antique from memory in 1905.(1) He was appointed architect and engineer to Clonakilty Rural District Council in 1911 and engineer to the West Cork Board of Health and Public Assistance in 1925. He died at the age of sixty-three on 29 January 1940.   His obituary in the Southern Star of 3 February 1940 recalled his kindness and the 'remarkable quality of placidity that seemed to reign continually with him' and particularly noted his active promotion of tree planting in the poorer areas of West Cork, while the committee of the Dunmanway branch of the Labour Party paid tribute to his sympathetic and understanding approach to the welfare of working people.

O'Crowley was married to Margaret, daughter of James O'Brien of Carrigroe, and had eight sons and three daughters.
