Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Engineer, of Galway city. Hubert O'Connor, a native of Co. Roscommon, was born on 27 July 1893 and attended St Jarlath's College, Tuam, and St Joseph's, Galway, before entering University College, Galway, in 1912 to study engineering. He graduated with the BE degree in 1916 and then worked for the Ministry of Munitions in Dublin and Galway. From 1918 to 1920 he worked as an assistant to WILLIAM N. BINNS WILLIAM N. BINNS , Borough Surveyor for Galway. In 1920 he obtained the ME degree and returned to University College, Galway, to work at first as an assistant and later as a lecturer in the faculty of civil engineering under FRANK SHARMAN RISHWORTH FRANK SHARMAN RISHWORTH . Although teaching remained his predominant interest, he also had a private engineering practice, specializing in water supply and sewerage. He was appointed consulting engineer of the Galway City sewerage scheme in 1936.(1) He was also responsible for the design of a number of buildings. He died on 21 January 1956, leaving a widow. The firm of H.G.L. O'Connor & Co. continued after his death.
