Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Assistant county surveyor for Co. Down from 1900 or earlier until 1915 or later. According to the 1911 census, Edward Patrick Nolan was born in Co. Down circa1867.  He was a son of Thomas Nolan, who is said to have come of Co. Kerry stock and was, like his son, an assistant county surveyor for Co. Down. According to HENRY CHAPPELL HENRY CHAPPELL , who proposed Edward Patrick for membership of the Institution of Civil Engineers of Ireland in 1900, Edward Nolan was 'reared to the profession from childhood' and had 'lifelong practical experience with his father who had a very extensive private practice'. He also trained as an architect in the office of JOHN JOSEPH MCDONNELL  JOHN JOSEPH MCDONNELL in Belfast. By 1900, he had become an assistant county surveyor for Co. Down 'in room of his deceased father' and had also carried out various works for the Downpatrick Board of Guardians. He is described as engineer to Downpatrick Rural District Council in 1908.(1) He died in 1916. By his wife, Rita, he was the father of seven children.(2)
