Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of Coleraine, Co. Derry. It appears from the 1911 census that Malcolm McQuigg, who was born circa 1905,(1) was brought up in a farming family in Knockaduff, Agivey, Co. Derry.   He attended Coleraine Academical Institution(2) before becoming a pupil in the office of W. & M GIVEN  GIVEN in Coleraine. On completing his apprenticeship, when he was still only twenty, he was made a partner in the practice, which he carried on after the death of MAXWELL GIVEN  MAXWELL GIVEN in 1934, building it up to become one of the largest in the north west of Ireland. He became architect to a number of local authorities, including Limavady Rural District Council.(3) He was architect and surveyor to the Church of Ireland Diocesan Synod of Derry and Raphoe and to the Honourable the Irish Society, through which connection he received the freedom of the City of London in 1969. He was in London to attend the Society's annual dinner when he died on 2 December 1974. He had retired from practice a few months earlier on reaching the age of 70. In his leisure McQuigg was an active sportsman. He won the first North-West 200 motor cycle race in 1929 and was a member of the Bann Rowing Club and the Coleraine Gun Club.
