Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of Belfast, active from the 1920s until circa 1979. Cormac Thomas MacLynn, who is said to have been born in Sligo,(1) appears to have started his career with private commercial and domestic work in Belfast but later to have worked chiefly in the public sector, his projects including several vocational schools in Cos. Mayo and Leitrim, new hospitals at Sligo and Manorhamilton, Co. Leitrim, and new buildings at the Monaghan Mental Hospital. He was for a time engineer and architect to Ballycastle (Co. Antrim) Rural District Council, a post from which he resigned in 1942.(2)

RIAI: 'Thomas J. McLynn' appears in the membership lists of the RIAI from 1923 until 1941 or later, the date of his election being given as 1922. The facts that his addresses are the same as those of Cormac MacLynn, that no works by a person of this name are recorded and that his membership of the RIAI appears to have ceased at about the same time that Cormac MacLynn became an associate of the RIBA, strongly suggest that he was the same person.

RIBA: registered probationer, 1932;(3) elected associate, 15 January 1946, having been proposed by PATRICK BERNARD. GREGORY PATRICK BERNARD. GREGORY , ROBERT HANNA GIBSON  ROBERT HANNA GIBSON and REGINALD SHARMAN WILSHERE. REGINALD SHARMAN WILSHERE. (4)
RSUA: associate by 1937;(5) no longer on list of members after 1979.

Addresses:(6) 42 Thorndale Avenue, Antrim Road, Belfast, 1923-1938; 35 Royal Avenue, Belfast, 1939- 1947; 142 Royal Avenue, 1948; 71 Eglantine Avenue, 1970-1979.
