Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Engineer.   Howard McFerran, who was born in Belfast circa 1865, was one of the first engineers to be appointed by the Ministry of Works in England. He was living in London at the time of the English census of 1901 and was promoted to the position of chief engineer in the Office of Works in 1907. In this capacity he supervised works at the royal palaces and was responsible for installing the electric lighting at the coronation of George V. He gave up active work as a consulting engineer at the outbreak of the second world war and died, aged ninety-two, at Kilroot, Co. Antrim, in 1957.
