Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Builder, of Derry. William McElwee[1] was born in 1821, the younger son of ALEXANDER MCELWEE[1] ALEXANDER MCELWEE[1] , architect, and the younger brother and business partner of ALEXANDER MCELWEE[2].  ALEXANDER MCELWEE[2]. Slater's National Commercial Directory for 1846 lists the brothers as builders in Bishop Street and 'four doors from the bridge, Foyle st', Derry, and 'William McIlwee', carpenter and builder of Foyle Street and Bishop Street, appears in the Belfasrt and Province of Ulster Directory for 1852.

William McElwee[1] was married twice, first to Catherine Lawn, by whom he had two sons (William and Alexander) and two daughters, second, at St Columb's Cathedral, Derry, on 24 January 1862, to Isabella Shaw, by whom he was the father of ROBERT HAMILTON MCELWEE  ROBERT HAMILTON MCELWEE and another son. He died on 24 December 1865.
