Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of Dublin. George Palmer Beater was born in Dublin on 16 June 1850, the son of Orlando Beater, of Glenarm, Terenure, chairman of Arnott & Co. Ltd, Dublin. He was educated in Dublin and articled to ALFRED GRESHAM JONES ALFRED GRESHAM JONES . He married firstly, in 1880, Isabel, daughter of William James Stokes, of Dublin, by whom he had one son, Leslie Orlando; secondly, in 1896, Constance, daughter of R. Middleton Perry, J.P, of Dublin, by whom he had two daughters and one son, George Perry. He died at his home in Rathgar on 8 February 1928, and was buried in Mount Jerome cemetery.(1) His obituarist in the Irish Builder remembered him as 'a kindly, courteous gentleman, liked and respected by all who knew him. Modest and very retiring, he never took any active part in the affairs of the profession or of the Institute. In his particular connection he paid close and special attention to his work, which he faithfully discharged. In private life his interests centred in charity and good deeds…The late Mr Beater was identified with many charitable or philanthropic institutions in Dublin. He was a Governor of the Royal Hospital for Incurables, and…the Old Men's Home, Leeson Park…'.
