Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of Dublin and Derrynane Abbey, Co. Kerry. Daniel O'Connell, a grandson of the Liberator, was born on 20 November 1836 to Maurice O'Connell of Derrynane (d. 1853), MP for Tralee, and his wife Frances Mary, daughter of John Bindon Scott of Cahircon, Co. Clare. He entered the Royal Navy in 1850 but left in 1853 to train as an architect. He served his pupilage with JOSEPH ALOYSIUS HANSOM  JOSEPH ALOYSIUS HANSOM in London.(1)  In June 1860 a notice in The Times (reported in The Builder) announced that he,  'having completed his course of study under Mr Hansom...and improved his observation by inspecting the best specimens of church architecture in classic lands', had 'determined to commence his profession in Dublin as an architect'.(2)   In the same year he became the partner of JAMES JOSEPH MCCARTHY JAMES JOSEPH MCCARTHY ;(2) from the evidence of the directories the partnership had come to an end by 1863.(3) After this O'Connell, who had inherited Derrynane Abbey on his father's death in 1853, ceased active practice, although he produced a few designs, including the Catholic churches of Cahirdaniel and Bonane in Co. Kerry, Terryglass in Co. Tipperary, and several presbyteries. He was a justice of the peace and a deputy lieutenant for Co. Kerry. He died on 30 May 1919. He had married Isabella Ellen, daughter of Denis Shine Lawlor of Castlelough, Killarney, on 23 April 1861 and had five daughters.
