Dublin city architect, 1893-1921. Charles James McCarthy, the only son of JAMES JOSEPH MCCARTHY JAMES JOSEPH MCCARTHY , was born on 8 December 1858.(1) He received his professional training in his father's office at 183 Great Brunswick Street, moving with him in 1881 to new premises at 12 Westland Row.  Following his father's death in February 1882, he inherited the practice, which was primarily engaged in designing buildings for the Catholic church, and was briefly in partnership with the Belfast architect JOHN O'NEILL JOHN O'NEILL , who had a similar clientele, until O'Neill's death in May 1883 (see O'NEILL & NEILL & amp; MCCARTHY MCCARTHY ). On 4 December1893 he was elected from among ten candidates to fill the post of city architect in succession to DANIEL J. FREEMAN. DANIEL J. FREEMAN. (2) In this capacity he designed many public buildings, including libraries, fire stations and the Bolton Street Technical School, and over 1,700 dwellings under the Housing of the Working Classes Acts. His salary was increased by £100 per annum in 1901.(3)

McCarthy remained a bachelor until relatively late in life. On 11 January 1905 at the Church of the Redeemer, Chelsea, he married Clara Louise Christian, an English painter - and friend of the writer George Moore - who had settled at Tymon Lodge, Tallaght.(4) She died in childbirth at Tymon Lodge on 7 June 1906, aged thirty-eight.(5) In 1911 McCarthy was knocked down by a van in Dame Street but was not seriously injured.(6) Poor health, however, caused him to resign from the post of city architect in the summer of 1921.(7) He nevertheless survived for many years, living - it would appear - at the Stephen's Green Club. He died aged eighty-nine on 16 October 1947 and was buried with his wife and parents in the family plot at Glasnevin Cemetery.(8)

While he was city architect, McCarthy acted as assessor for various architectural competitions: for the Iveagh Markets in 1902;(9) for the Dublin improvement plan in 1916 (with Patrick Geddes and John Nolan);(10) and for the National University of Ireland offices in Upper Mount Street in 1916.(11) His pupils and assistants included GEORGE TIGHE MOORE  GEORGE TIGHE MOORE and HORACE TENNYSON O'ROURKE HORACE TENNYSON O'ROURKE ..
