MCALERY, JOSEPH RICHARD PIKE

Railway engineer. Joseph McAlery, a son of J.M. McAlery of Belfast, was apprenticed to BERKELEY DEANE WISE , engineer to the Belfast & Northern Counties Railway Co. from 1899 until 1903. He then worked as an assistant to JAMES BARTON on the Strabane & Letterkenny railway, after which he was placed in charge of works at Whitehead, Co. Antrim, for the Belfast & Northern Counties railway. Soon afterwards he went to South America. By 1906 he was working for the Argentine Great Western Railway, based in Mendoza, and from circa 1911 to 1915 he was in charge of the building of the station at Cordoba, Argentina, for the Central Argentine Railway. In 1915 he was appointed constructive and sectional engineer for that company. He died at the British Hospital in Buenos Aires in about 1921.
