Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of Dublin. William Vitruvius Morrison was born in Clonmel, Co. Tipperary, on 22 April 1794, the second of the four sons of RICHARD MORRISON RICHARD MORRISON , by his wife Eliza, daughter of the Rev. Dr William Ould, rector of Philipstown, Co. Offaly. He was a delicate child and for this reason was educated entirely at home. He showed a talent for drawing from an early age. When he was only fifteen, according to the memoir written by his brother John, his father, who had been commissioned to remodel Ballyheigue Castle, Co. Kerry, in the castle style, suggested that he should make a design for the house as an architectural exercise. 'To the astonishment of his father, he, in the course of a few days, produced the noble design subsequently erected, which displayed an accuracy of knowledege of the details and proprieties of this species of architecture, which, in an artist of his years, ranked him at once amongst the few rare examples of early genius which illustrate the history of the human mind.' From this time Richard Morrison 'found in his son a valuable assistant indeed in his professional pursuits…an exhaustless mine of taste in design and composition'.

In 1821 William Morrison visited the Continent, spending some months in Rome, from which he made a visit to Paestum. He was prevented from going to Greece by the poor health from which he suffered during the period of his travels. He also stayed in Paris and travelled in England, where he made a particular study of Tudor architecture. On his return to Dublin(1) he continued for a while to work with his father, but, according to John Morrison, 'soon found that the numerous applications to him individually, rendered it desirable that he should pursue his career independently'.(2) It appears, however, that he continued to work from the same premises at 10 Upper Gloucester Street or from a neighbouring house.(3) Meanwhile his poor health, 'which seemed to have its seat chiefly in the nervous system', persisted and intensified; John Morrison attributes the aggravation of the depression from which his brother suffered 'to the absence of those domestic affections and ties which his most sensitive mind was so formed to enjoy and appreciate, which he so ardently longed for, but which fate and circumstances…shut out from his desires, whilst he was capable from physical power to enjoy them'. In the hope of improving his health, he spent the winter of 1836 to 1837 at Nimes and at mineral spas in the Pyrenees, but at Bordeaux in the summer of 1837 his suffered a severe attack of illness, 'which brought on phrenzy, under which he nearly sank'. He returned to Ireland, where for a while he seemed to rally; however in the summer of 1838 he fell ill again, this time becoming paralysed. After four months of suffering, he died at his father's house, Walcot, near Bray, on 16 October 1838. He was buried in the family vault at Mount Jerome Cemetery, over which his friends erected a sarcophagus from one of his own designs.(4)

Morrison was a keen antiquarian and a friend of George Petrie, who published two illustrated letters from him - about the round towers at Roscrea amd Rattoo and the church and round tower at Dysart - in The Ecclesiastical Architecture of Ireland (1845).(5) His niece Eliza Alicia Morrison published a summary of his observations on various types of English Gothic and Tudor domestic architecture, taken from one of his notebooks, in the Dublin Builder in 1859.(6) Some of these notebooks are now in the library of the University of St Louis(?), Missouri.(7) A series of 29 pages from another notebook, containing sketches of landscape, architecture and antiquities, was bought by the National Library of Ireland at Christie's, 20 June 1978.
