Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect and engineer, of Dublin. Ernest Horatio Morris, a son of William A. Morris and his wife, Rosalie, was born in Bolton, Lancashire, in February 1861, and was articled to RICHARD KNILL FREEMAN  RICHARD KNILL FREEMAN of Manchester and Bolton. He was subsequently employed in Liverpool, London, Edinburgh and Kenilworth before coming to Ireland in 1888 to work in the office of THOMAS NEWENHAM DEANE & THOMAS NEWENHAM DEANE & amp; SON.   He remained in the Deanes' office until Christmas 1891, with the exception of a period in the winter of 1890 when he was employed on the Galway to Clifden Railway.(1) In 1892 he entered the office of the Dublin city engineer, DANIEL J. FREEMAN. W DANIEL J. FREEMAN. W hen Freeman left the following year, Morris was one of ten candidates who presented themselves for the post but gained only one vote at the first ballot.(2) He remained in the city engineer's office under CHARLES JAMES MCCARTHY  CHARLES JAMES MCCARTHY until 1896, when he set up in private practice at Leinster Chambers, Dame Street. He may have left Ireland after 1924, when he ceased to be a member of the RIAI. No works by him are recorded in the Irish Builder.

ICEI: elected associate, 13 April 1898;(3) ceased to be a member between 1917 and 1920.
RIAI: elected member, 17 December 1892, having been proposed by THOMAS NEWENHAM DEANE THOMAS NEWENHAM DEANE , seconded by WILLIAM MITCHELL  WILLIAM MITCHELL and THOMAS MANLY DEANE THOMAS MANLY DEANE ;(4) elected auditor, 3 Dec 1913;(5) ceased to be a member after 1924.
