Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Sculptor, for biography of whom see W.G. Strickland, A Dictionary of Irish Artists (1913), II, 122, and Paula Murphy, Nineteenth-Century Irish Sculpture:  Native Genius Reaffirmed  (Yale University Press:  New Haven & London, 2010), 92-94. Christopher Moore, who was born in Dublin in 1790, appears to have trained as a stuccadore, for in 1819 he carried out the elaborate ceiling in the dining room designed by RICHARD MORRISON  RICHARD MORRISON at Carton, Co. Kildare, a commission for which he sent in a bill for £1,300.(1) In the same year he exhibited two works, 'Portrait of Himself' and 'The Combat between the Archangel Michael and Satan' at the Dublin Society's premises in Hawkins Street. In 1820 he went to London, where he lived for the rest of his life, although he continued to be a frequent visitor to Dublin. He died in Dublin on 17 March 1863 and was buried in Glasnevin Cemetery.

At the beginning of his career in London Moore exhibited sketches for two grand allegorical works on Irish themes at the Royal Academy - 'Erin pursued by the Furies finds protection at the foot of the Throne' (1823) and 'King supported by Hercules and Minerva consummates the union of the sister kindoms' (1824) - but most of his work consisted of portrait busts. His full-size statue of Thomas Moore in College Street, Dublin, which was erected in 1857(2) attracted much hostile criticism.(3)
