Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of Dublin. The unpublished research of Jacqueline Eick in the Dresden archives and the more recent research of Loreto Calderón and Konrad Dechant, published in 2010,(1) have established that Richard Castle's father was an English-born Jew named Joseph Riccardo, who was appointed Director of Munitions and Mines to Friedrich Augustus, Elector of Saxony and King of Poland, in 1699 and settled in Dresden in or before 1708.  Richard Castle, born David Riccardo, was one of the four sons of Joseph Riccardo by his second marriage, which took place in Amsterdam in 1691;  his mother Rachel Burgos had been born in Bombay.  His own place and date of birth are not yet known, nor when or why he changed his name. He is said to have became an officer in a regiment of engineers, and to have travelled in Germany, France and Holland circa 1720, studying fortifications and canals. By 1725 he was looking at waterworks and architecture in England, where he was probably in contact with Lord Burlington's circle. In 1728 he was in Ireland, to which he is said to have been brought by Sir Gustavus Hume to design Castle Hume, Co. Fermanagh. After his arrival in Ireland he was employed as a draughtsman on the plans for the new Parliament House by EDWARD LOVETT PEARCE EDWARD LOVETT PEARCE , who regarded him highly.(2) The genesis and extent of his professional relationship with Pearce is unknown, but it is clear that Pearce relied on his expertise both at the Parliament House and for the Newry Canal works, for which Pearce became responsible when he succeeded THOMAS BURGH  THOMAS BURGH as Surveyor General. A few months after Pearce's death in December 1733, Castle was appointed engineer to the canal, a position which he held until 1736.(3)

In 1735 Castle and GABRIEL STOKES  GABRIEL STOKES were consulted by Dublin Corporation's pipe water committee about improving Dublin's water supply. Both men's schemes were published in 1735, but neither was implemented; instead the committee reached the conclusion that an adequate supply might be achieved simply by eliminating wastage through the improvement and repair of the existing system. Castle's advice on the means of preventing wastage was being sought the following year.(4)

Castle built up an extensive private practice in Ireland, as well as designing a variety of public buildings. During the later 1730s and 1740s he was much employed by Trinity College, Dublin. By 1737 he had become a member of the Incorporated Society for Promoting English Protestant Schools in Ireland, and he is known to have designed at least one of the schools.(5) By 1743 he had taken on as clerk and measurer JOHN ENSOR JOHN ENSOR , who was to carry on the practice after Castle's death in 1751. He became a member of the Dublin Society in 1745 and judged an architectural competition there in the same year, awarding the prize to John Ensor's brother GEORGE ENSOR.  GEORGE ENSOR.

According to the short biography in Anthologia Hibernica for October 1793, Castle was a man of integrity, of amiable though somewhat eccentric manners, kept poor by his improvidence and long afflicted by gout resulting from intemperance and late hours. The same source states that he often pulled down those of his works which were not to his liking, 'and whenever he came to inspect them … required the attendance of all the artificers who followed him in a long train'.
On 27 June 1733 Castle married Jane Truffet or Truphet (d.1744), daughter of James and Ann Truffet, of Lisburn, Co. Antrim, at St Michan's church in Dublin.(6) He died suddenly of a fit at Carton, Co. Kildare, on 19 Febrary 1751 while writing a letter to a carpenter employed at Leinster House, and was buried in Maynooth. His effects were sold at auction the following year. In a will drawn up on 11 August 1750 he instructed that his property be divided between his sister-in-law Anne Truffet and his three brothers in Saxony, Samuel de Richardi, Daniel De Richardi and Benjamin De Richardi.(7) 'Coll Castel de Richardi' is named as an executor of Richard Castle in 1752,(10) while Benjamin Castle, described as Richard Castle's son and administrator, was granted administration of the goods of Richard Castle's wife, Jane Castle on 28 May 1753.(8) Eight years later, in 1761, 'Daniel De Richardi otherwise called Daniel Castles De Richardi of Saxony in Germany' and 'Benjamin de Richardi otherwise called Benjamin Castles De Richardi of the City of Dublin Esqr Administrator of the Goods of Richard Castles unadministered' were parties to the sale of a piece of land on St Stephen's Green.(9)

Richard Castle was a subscriber to the third volume of Vitruvius Britannicus and to Richard Barton's Lectures in natural philosophy, : designed, to be a foundation, for reasoning pertinently, upon the petrifications, gems, crystals, and sanative quality of Lough Neagh in Ireland (1751).

The IAA holds a number of designs by Richard Castle in the Guinness Collection: for Leinster House (96/68.1/1/1-23), for Carton (96/68.2/1/2-14) and for Headfort House (96/68.3/1/2-5). It also holds plans and elevations by Castle for an unidentified house of seven bays (86/24.1-3) and a design attributed to him for another seven-bay house with flanker towers (86/24.4). In the Powerscourt Albums there are five designs for  for a six-bay town house (Acc. 89/62.1/1/1-4 and 1/14/3) which have been attributed to Castle by David Griffin on stylistic grounds.

Addresses: Castle Hume, Co. Fermanagh, circa 1729; Suffolk Street, Dublin, 1733; near York Street, Dublin, 1748; Proud's Lane, Dublin, 1750.
