Architect, of Belfast. In 1933 or 1934 William Maxwell formed a partnership with WILLIAM MACARTNEY GAMBLE and J.F. HAY,(1) practising as GAMBLE HAY & MAXWELL until 1937 and as GAMBLE & MAXWELL thereafter.(2) Initially Gamble worked from Belfast while, until at least 1939, Maxwell ran the firm's Lisburn office. However by 1942 Maxwell had moved to Belfast, presumably to take charge of the office there while Gamble was on active service overseas with the Royal Engineers. The partnership lasted until at least 1956. Maxwell continued to practise under his own name until 1983.
