Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect and builder, of Cork, active in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Edward Marks produced plans for repairing St Stephen's Hospital, Cork, in 1798,(1) and built a house for Joseph Gibson in 1801.(2) He was also the architect of the Methodist Church in Patrick Street, Cork, built in 1805.(3) In 1810 he witnessed the will of Jeremiah Lynch, of Kilcullen, Co. Cork.(4)   He appears in Pigot & Co.'s City of Dublin and Hibernian Provincial Directory (1824) with an address at 16 Fish Street, Cork,(5) and is also listed in Connor's Cork Directory for 1817 and 1828.(6)

Marks appears to have been married twice: first, in 1786, to Ann Jeffreys, and second, in 1788, to Jane Wright.(7)  EDWARD MARKS [2]  EDWARD MARKS [2] was the elder son of his second marriage.(8) His will, dated 1832, names Jane Marks as his executor.(9)  His pupils and assistants included WILLIAM HILL[1] WILLIAM HILL[1] , who was apprenticed to him in 1813. The indenture states that Marks, who is described as a builder, 'engages to have said apprentice taught drawing or shall teach him to draw plans of Buildings'.(10)
