Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect and engineer, of Sligo. Patrick Kilgallin, who was born in 1860, was a younger son of the Sligo builder Charles Kilgallin (1822-1885) of Abbeyville, Sligo, the contractor for St Mary's Catholic cathedral, Sligo, by his wife Anne, née Leonard. He was a younger brother of CHARLES J. KILGALLIN CHARLES J. KILGALLIN . He built up an extensive private practice as an architect and engineer. According to his obituary in the Sligo Independent, he 'deserves to be remembered as the "Architect of Elphin", for he prepared the plans for a number of chapels throughtout the Diocese…and for practically every school built in the Diocese during the time of Most Rev. Dr Gillooly and Most Rev. Dr Clancy'.

Kilgallin was appointed borough surveyor for Sligo in 1908,(1) taking the place of WILLIAM COCHRANE  WILLIAM COCHRANE and his assistant JOHN FAWCETT GILCRIEST. H JOHN FAWCETT GILCRIEST. H e was succeeded as Borough Surveyor by JOHN P. QUINN JOHN P. QUINN , probably circa 1932, and died on 26 February 1944.  At  the time of the 1911 census, when he was aged fifty, he was unmarried..
