Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Irish architect practising in London, circa 1857-1873, for whom see Directory of British Architects 1834-1914 (RIBA 2001), I, 1040. John Philpot Jones, who was born in Cork circa 1830,(1) came to London in the 1850s. Two of the earliest works he exhibited at the Royal Academy were both competition designs for buildings in Cork: the Town Hall (1857, no. 1090) and the church of SS. Peter and Paul (1859, nos. 1076, 1113).(2)  In 1857 he also submitted an entry in the competition for the Ulster Bank head office in Belfast, with a design which 'borrowed freely from the Army and Navy Club'.(3)  He is mentioned in the Dublin Builder in 1859 as having won a competition for a new prison at Genoa and as having designed two prisons in Turin;(4) in 1860 the same journal reproduced his project for the War Office in London.(5)   He was one of the many entrants in the Cork Church of Ireland Cathedral competition of 1862-3.(6)   Jones was working with Edward Salomons in the early 1870s but but died in June 1873 at the age of forty-three;(7)  the following year Salomons exhibited a design at the Royal Academy by himself and 'the late J.P. Jones' (1874, no. 1126). Jones had married an English wife and had two daughters who were born in London in the late 1850s.(8)
