Engineer with the Belfast & Northern Counties Railway - later the Midland Railway (Northern Counties Committee) - from 1879 until circa 1923. According to the 1911 census, Francis George Hopkirm was born in Belfast in 1862 or 1863. In 1878 he entered the office of ROBERT COLLINS , engineer to the Belfast & Northern Counties Railway and, after a year as Collins's pupil, spent a further six years as his assistant. In 1889 he became principal assistant to Collins's successor, BERKELEY DEANE WISE . He remained in the service of the company until about 1923, after which he appears to have been in independent practice for a short time. He died in 1957 or 1958. At the time of the 1911 census he had been married to his wife, Annie, for nineteen years and had two sons.
