Surveyor, of Moyle, Co. Donegal. John Hood, who was born circa 1721, was living near St Johnston, Co. Donegal, when James Hamilton, agent to the 8th Earl of Abercorn, asked him to survey the lands of Tonagh, Co. Donegal, in 1769. John Hood, who was said by Hamilton to be 'reputed a good surveyor and honest man', had published Tables of difference of latitude and departure for navigators, land surveyors &c. in 1772. He surveyed all the Abercorn estates 'at considerable labour and expense' in the years 1774-1777. He died in 1784. His son, John Hood the younger, for whom see Oxford DNB, was a surveyor in Dublin and an inventor of surveying instruments.
