HILL, HENRY
- Born: 1806ca Died: 1887
Architect, of Cork. Henry Hill was born in 1807, the second surviving son of THOMAS HILL and a younger brother of WILLIAM HILL . Henry Hill may possibly have received part of his architectural training in England. He was in London from at least January 1826 until early 1827. He left London on 27 Jan 1827, and arrived in Cork via Bristol, on 2 February.(1). The presence of designs by GEORGE RICHARD PAIN among the Hill material in the Cork Museum and in the possession of Hill's great-granddaughter, Myrtle Allen, suggests that he may perhaps have worked in Pain's office on his return to Cork. It is possible that William Hill also worked for Pain.
Hill, in his early life at least, appears to have been as interested in landscape and topographical painting as he was in architecture. His notebooks contain many notes about painting techniques. Seven of his drawings of antiquarian sites in Cos. Cork and Tipperary appear in the Dublin Penny Journal for the years 1832-1834.(2) In 1836 he exhibited eight drawings of architectural subjects in Ireland, England, France and Italy at the RHA. He exhibited other topographical views at the Mechanics' Institute Exhibition, Cork, in 1828, at the Cork Society for Promoting the Fine Arts in 1833, at the National Exhibition, Cork, in 1852, and at the Irish Exhibition, Dublin, in 1882. In 1902 one of his watercolour views of Cork was exhibited by his son ARTHUR HILL at the Cork International Exhibition.(3)
Henry Hill took Arthur Hill into partnership circa 1869. In this year he won an action for negligence which had been taken against him in relation to a building which had collapsed in a storm while it was being rebuilt. Hill's lawyer stated that his client had hoped to settle out of court as he 'had a tendency to heart disease, and…should avoid excitement and annoyance of all kinds'.(4) In fact Hill lived a further seventeen years, and 'down to the last day of his life … took an active part in his profession'. He died in his eighty-first year and was buried in Cloyne Cathedral on 30 May 1887. He was married to Margaret McNaughton Sayers.(5)
Hill's pupils and assistants included his nephews WILLIAM HENRY HILL and RICHARD ARTHUR HILL.
Four sketchbooks-cum-notebooks kept by Hill are in the Cork Museum (Ref. G.301). Their contents are as follows: No 1: chiefly views of buildings in the Dublin area, June 1837; No. 2: views in Cos. Kerry and Cork, Aug-Sep 1841, Hythe (Kent), June 1842, Cos. Cork & Limerick, 1855. No. 3: chiefly topographical views in Co. Cork, circa 1830-31. No. 4: chiefly sketches and notes made in England, 1826-1827 and circa 1830 and sketches in Ireland, circa 1829-1831. The Hill material in the Cork Museum also includes miscellaneous loose drawings, including a plan & elevation of Monkstown church by George Richard Pain, and a design for a Wesleyan chapel by WILLIAM FOGERTY. A large collection of drawings by Hill, which also includes drawings by G.R. Pain, William Henry Hill, Arthur Hill and Henry Houghton Hill, is in the collection of Hill's great-granddaughter, Myrtle Allen, at Ballymaloe House, Co. Cork.
