Selected: HIGGINBOTHAM, FREDERICK WILLIAM
| Born: 1874 |
| Died: 1939 |
Engineer and architect, of Dublin. Frederick William Higginbotham, son of Maurice Fitzgerald Higginbotham of Glenmaurice, St Laurence Rd, Clontarf, Dublin, and his wife, Kate Jane (née Harte), was born on 28 July 1874.(1) He attended the College of Science from 1892 to 1893, after which he served a four-year apprenticeship to the engineer RICHARD JOHN STIRLING , engaged on road, sewerage and water supply work. In 1898 he was in practice with VIVIAN HAGHE. (2) Although he was passed for ballot as a member of the RIAI in 1898 (3) and again in 1901 (4), he was not elected, and instead became a member of the London-based Society of Architects. He had set up his own office at 9 Lower Sackville Street by 1900. He soon became surveyor to various large private estates: the Herbert estate at Killiney, Co. Dublin, the Kemmis estates at Portlaoise, the Lansdowne estates in Cos. Dublin and Meath, and, from 1902, the Earl of Howth's estate in Dublin. He had a particular interest in refrigeration, and designed and carried out the Dublin Ice and Cold Storage Works at Warrenmount, Dublin. His office was destoyed in the 1916 Rebellion, after which he worked from temporary premises at 32 Batchelor's Walk,(5) before moving to 24 Nassau Street towards the end of 1917.(6) By 1922 he had formed a partnership with ARTHUR JAMES STAFFORD to form the firm of HIGGINBOTHAM & amp; STAFFORD.
In 1905 Higginbotham was elected to a seat in the Dublin City Council as a representative of Clontarf East,(7) and in 1908 he was appointed a justice of the peace for the borough of Dublin.(8) He actively supported the establishment of of Howth as an urban district and, when this took place in 1919, became the first surveyor to the newly-constituted authority, a post which he retained until his death.(9)
Higginbotham died on 18 September 1938.(10) He is described in his obituary as a man whose 'professional activities ranged over an unusually wide and varied field', with a practical approach to architecture and 'little patience with vendors of abstract ideas'.(11)
