Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect and 'CE' of Dromore, Co. Down, and Belfast. Henry Hobart was born on 24 December 1858, the elder of the two sons(1) of George and Hannah Hobart of Lagan Lodge near Dromore, Co. Down. He was educated at the Belfast Royal Academical Insitution before being articled to WILLIAM HENRY LYNN  WILLIAM HENRY LYNN for the sum of £1,000. On completing his apprenticeship in 1890, he married Maria Lusk of Loughbrickland and set up in practice in a part of Lagan Lodge, which had been previously used by his father for his linen business. In 1904 he formed a partnership with SAMUEL HERON SAMUEL HERON , practising as HOBART & HERON HOBART & HERON , and in 1905 the partners opened an office in the Scottish Provident Buildings, Belfast. Henry Hobart retired from practice in the mid 1920s and died, after a long illness, on 18 June 1938, aged 80. His son George became a a partner in the firm.

See WORKS; see also HOBART & HERON HOBART & HERON . The attribution of some works undertaken after the formation of the partnership specifically to Henry Hobart follows Eugene Corbett's thesis (see references, below).

All information in this entry not otherwise accounted for is from Eugene T. Corbett, 'The Architecture of Henry Hobart and Samuel Heron' (unpublished dissertation for the Diploma in Advanced Architectural Studies, Queen's University, Belfast, 1990), pp.1-5,16. Corbett notes in his introduction that the present firm of Hobart & Heron were 'unwilling or unable' to offer him any assistance in his research, but he received much help from Henry Hobart's two daughters Hannah and Maureen Hobart, who own a number of their father's drawings and were able to tell Corbett of several works by Henry Hobart which he did not previously know about.

(1) The George Hobart, junior, who is named in Thom's Directory for 1922 as town surveyor of Dromore may have been the younger son.
