Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Engineer, of Dublin. John Houghton served an apprenticeship with the firm of Carmichael & Geraty and completed his pupilage under FREDERICK DARLEY.& FREDERICK DARLEY.& #160;  After working in Belfast for a time he returned to Dublin, where by 1874 he had been appointed manager of the the hydraulic department of Brooks, Thomas & Co., window glass suppliers, painters, decorators, glaziers, ironmongers, marble masons and hydraulic engineers. He was the author of New Dublin; or Health in Highways, Byways & Homes, published in 1879.(1) He died in 1884 or 1885.(2)  He had married Kate Bromlow at Rathmines Church of Ireland church on 12 May 1866, and had at least one son, George, born in 1873, and one daughter, Katherine, born in 1877.(3)

RIAI: proposed as student at council meeting, 15 April or 11 May 1865, and at general meeting, 10 July 1865, by THOMAS DREW THOMAS DREW , seconded by JAMES HIGGINS OWEN  JAMES HIGGINS OWEN and CHARLES HENRY BRIEN CHARLES HENRY BRIEN ;(5) elected student, 23 November 1865;(6) associate by 1871.(7)
