Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

William Hastings, who was born in 1814,(1) was Surveyor of Works for the Borough of Belfast from 1849 until 1857.(2) He appears to have worked largely privately for the remainder of his career, although he is styled 'architect to the town council' in the Irish Builder in 1868(3) and was still doing work for Belfast Corporation as late as 1879. He died in 1892.(4) He appears to have been related to EBENEZER HASTINGS  EBENEZER HASTINGS and JOSEPH HASTINGS JOSEPH HASTINGS , who are commemorated on a plaque which William Hastings erected in 1860 in the family plot in the Clifton Street graveyard.(5) His widow, Ellen, second daughter of John Rogers, J.P., of Eden-a-Grena, Belfast, died in 1894 at Craigfernie Terrace, Lisburn Road, Belfast.(6)
