Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Engineer, specializing in reinforced concrete design. William Samuel Gray, who, according to the 1911 census was the elder son of William Gray, journalist, of Belgrave Square, Rathmines, Dublin, was born in Dublin on 15 November 1889 and educated at the High School and Trinity College, from which he obtained the BAI degree in 1912.(1) After graduating he was employed by the Great Northern Railway Company as engineer for the construction of a new cattle depot at Maysfield, Belfast. He had returned to Dublin by 1914, when he acted as contractor's engineer for the erection of coal bunkers and reinforced concrete piling at the Pigeon House Fort. From 1915 to 1917 he was employed as resident engineer on the new main drainage scheme for Rathmines. Gray joined the New Zealand Public Works Department in 1921 or 1922. He had left New Zealand by January 1925, when he delivered a paper to the ICEI (see BIBLIOGRAPHY BIBLIOGRAPHY ) and by 1926 he was working for the Ferro-Concrete Construction Company of Derby. In 1928 he was appointed technical editor of the London-based journal Concrete and Constructional Engineering, a position which he held until his death.
