Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

English-born engineer, who worked in England and Ireland for JOHN RENNIE JOHN RENNIE . John Grantham, who was baptised at Kirkton, Lancashire, on 28 November 1775 or 1778,(1) was sent by Rennie to Ireland in 1821 to make a survey of the Shannon from Roosky to Killaloe for the Irish Government with a view to reducing the level of the river.(2) The findings of the survey were published in the form of a memorial to the Lords of the Treasury. He was then engaged in rebuilding the bridges over the Shannon at Limerick,(3) Killaloe and Portumna, with wider arches so as better to accommodate flood water and in introducing steam navigation on the river from Killaloe to Shannon Harbour. He died at Killaloe in 1833 and is commemorated by a plaque in the Protestant cathedral.
