Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect and engineer, of Dublin. Charles Geoghegan, who was born in Dublin in 1820, was the fourth surviving son of Thomas Geoghegan, linen draper, of Sackville Street, Dublin by his wife Eliza, née Clements. He was educated in Dublin and trained originally as an engineer. As a young man, he went to London, where he decided to become an architect and served articles in the office of 'Mr Goodwin', probably George Godwin (1813-1888), for whom see Oxford DNB. While he was in London, Geoghegan helped prepare some of the plates for FRANCIS CRANMER PENROSE' FRANCIS CRANMER PENROSE' s Investigation of the Principles of Athenian Architecture (1851). At some stage, presumably before he decided to change from engineering to architecture, he is said to have worked on the new railway line from Bristol to Bath. After travelling on the continent studying architecture, he eventually set up in practice as an architect in London, probably circa 1849-51.(1) In about 1851, at 'the solicitation of his friends' he returned to Dublin,(2) where he practised for over forty years, designing commercial, industrial, and domestic buildings as well as several Catholic institutions. His clientèle was chiefly drawn from Catholic commercial and professional circles in Dublin. He exhibited sporadically at the Royal Hibernian Academy between 1851 and 1880,(3) and showed his 'Design for a national monument to the late Thomas Moore' at the Dublin Great Industrial Exhibition of 1853.(4) He was employed by the Royal Bank throughout his career and was architect to the Industrial Tenements Co.(5) In 1866 he was an unsuccessful candidate for the post of city architect.(6)

In 1869 Geoghegan invented and patented a self-acting regulator of high-pressure water supply. This, according to the description he supplied to the Irish Builder 'admits the high-pressure water supply into the loftiest storey of any building and, as soon as the cistern becomes filled, causes by its own action, the main inlet to be perfectly closed; the cock opening and closing as the water in the cistern is used…A self acting valve…exhausts the rising main when the cistern is charged, in order to prevent bursting of pipes during frost.'(7) He explained his invention to the RIAI on 18 March 1869(8) and exhibited his design at the RIAI conversazione of 16 December 1869.(9)

Geoghegan retired circa 1894, though he continued to take a 'deep and intelligent' interest in the affairs of the RIAI.(11) He died at his house in Pembroke Road on 26 June 1908 and was buried at Glasnevin Cemetery.(12) He was married to Elizabeth Jameson Kelly (d. 1928) from Waterford. Seven of the nine children of the marriage survived him, including his fifth son JOSEPH ALOYSIUS GEOGHEGAN JOSEPH ALOYSIUS GEOGHEGAN . He is described by his obituarists as a handsome man with 'a personality of peculiar charm' who was an ardent cyclist until he was well advanced in years.

Geoghegan's pupils and assistants included PATRICK JOSEPH DODD PATRICK JOSEPH DODD , GEORGE PATRICK SHERIDAN  GEORGE PATRICK SHERIDAN and his nephew RICHARD O'BRIEN SMYTH.  RICHARD O'BRIEN SMYTH.

The Irish Architectural Archive owns a small collection of architectural drawings by Geoghegan, which were presented by his grandson Cathal Geoghegan (Acc. 80/32).
