Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Town surveyor of Dundalk, Co. Louth. James Gaskin, who, according to his 1901 census return, was born in Co. Louth in 1857 or 1858, spent two years as an assistant county surveyor under JOHN NEVILLE  JOHN NEVILLE before being appointed town surveyor of Dundalk in May 1882, following the death of JOHN MURRAY[2]. JOHN MURRAY[2]. (1) In 1891 he was also appointed architect to the Dundalk Board of Guardians on the resignation of PETER CAHILL. PETER CAHILL. (2) In 1895 defects in the workhouse sewer which he had designed for the Board of Guardians led to a demand from some of the town commissioners that he should resign from the town surveyorship.(3) Although this proposal was carried by a majority of two at a meeting of the town commissioners on 4 June 1895, he remained in his post until his death, when he was succeeded by MAURICE SELLARS. MAURICE SELLARS. (4)

Gaskin died in 1902.  At the time of the 1901 census he was married to Annie  and had seven children.  His son James became a civil engineer.

Papers belonging to James Gaskin, including reports, correspondence and maps relating to the Dundalk sewerage scheme, the Newry channel improvement scheme and private house construction, 1880-1895 are in the Archives Department of University College, Dublin, where they form part of a much larger collection of papers relating to the Dundalk plumbing and foundry business run by Joseph and Anthony Gaskin, 1897-1958.(5)
