Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of Dublin. Joseph Kelly, a son of Denis Freeman, civil engineer, and his wife, Elizabeth, née Kelly, was born in Drumcondra, Dublin, on 2 February 1865.(1)   From 1 May 1882 he served a three-year apprenticeship with WILLIAM HAGUE. WILLIAM HAGUE. (2)   He then entered the office of JOHN LOFTUS ROBINSON  JOHN LOFTUS ROBINSON and by 1889 he was also working on his own account.(3)   In 1893 he was one of ten candidates who presented themselves for the post of city architect, which was given to CHARLES JAMES MCCARTHY. CHARLES JAMES MCCARTHY. (4) He exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1894, 1900 and 1901. At the time of the 1901 census he was unmarried, living with an elder brother and two sisters at at 67 Eccles Street.  Nothing is known of him after 1907, when he ceased to be a member of the RIAI.   He does not appear in the Dublin census of 1911.
