Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Stonecutter, builder and chimneypiece manufacturer of Upper Dorset St, Dublin, active from the 1820s. Robert Ballantine's name appears on a list of master builders in Dublin compiled in March 1834.(1)  From the late 1830s or earlier he traded as Robert Ballantine & Son, the son in question probably being Stirling Ballantine, who lived on the same premises at 9 Upper Dorset Street. ROBERT BALLANTINE [2] ROBERT BALLANTINE [2] , who also lived on the premises was presumably another son. The business appears as 'Stirling Ballantine' in Thom's Directory for 1858 though it has reverted to the name of Robert Ballantine & Son by 1863.  A Stirling Ballantine, who appears to have also had connections with the DARLEY FAMILY DARLEY FAMILY , gave a collection of designs for chimneypieces by GEORGE DARLEY  GEORGE DARLEY and HILL DARLEY  HILL DARLEY to the Royal Irish Academy in 1882.
