Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Sculptor, for whom see W.G. John Henry Foley, who was born in Dublin and entered the Royal Dublin Society's schools at the age of thirteen, left Ireland in 1834 for London, where he remained until his death in 1874. He bequeathed his models to the Royal Dublin Society.(1)

Nature: Bronze statue of Hugh, 1st Viscount Gough. Cast from metal of guns taken during Sikh campaign. Finished after Foley's death by Mssrs. Brock, Birch and Dewick. Unveiled 21 Feb 1880. (Blown up in 1956 and 1957, and sold in 1986 to Chillingham Estate, Northumberland.)
