Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Building contractor, of Dublin.   According to his 1901 census return, James Donovan was born in Dublin in 1844 or 1845.   He was active as a builder in Dublin from the 1860s until his death on 7 July 1907.  His obituary in the Irish Builder describes him as a man 'of very stong and tenacious character' with 'an experience of the building trade probably unequalled in Dublin'. He was married to Annie, a native of Salisbury, Wiltshire, and had at least three children. Towards the end of his life he took the eldest, Edward J. Donovan, into partnership.
