Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Builder, of Cork. Edward Fitzgerald was born on 24 November 1846, the son of Daniel Fitzgerald, of Gurtsmaurane, Treleary, Co. Cork. He started life as a carpenter(1) before establishing a building business in Cork.(2) It was he who first had the idea of staging the Cork Exhibition of 1902-1903.(3) He was a JP and alderman of Cork City and was the first elected lord mayor of the city from 1901 to 1903. In the latter year he was created a baronet.(4) In 1910 he unsuccessfully contested the parliamentary seat of Cork City. He married Anne, daughter of John O'Donoghue, in 1872, by whom he had eight children.(5)  Fitzgerald's Park is named after him.
