Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Railway engineer.  According to the 1911 census, John Edward Everett was born in England, probably in Bures Hamlet, Essex.(1) From 1879 to 1882 he was a pupil of KENNETT BAYLEY KENNETT BAYLEY , engineer to the Great Southern & Western Railway Co. in Ireland, working both during and after his pupilage on the Sallins and Baltinglass line.  He was resident engineer on the Queenstown extension from 1885 to 1889.  In 1889 he was appointed engineer to the Fermoy & Mitchelstown Railway Co. but ill-health prevented him from taking up the post.  Instead he went to Australia where, from 1890 to 1895, he worked in the Roads and Bridges Department of the New South Wales Government.   He returned to England in 1895 and, after five years as engineer to Scarborough Corporation, came back to Ireland in 1900 to take up the position of chief resident engineer on the construction of the Fishguard and Rosslare Railways and Harbours Railway from Waterford to Rosslare.  He was living in Monkstown, Cork, by 1911 and in 1912-1913 was responsible for rebuilding portions of the quay wall at Fota, Co. Cork, for Lord Barrymore.(2)

Everett may eventually have returned to his roots in England, where the death of a John Edward Everitt (sic) took place at Hatfield Peverel, Essex, in 1944.(3)  He was married to a wife from Co. Cork named Katherine and had a daughter and a son
