Alexander remained at University College, Cork, for the rest of his career. He became honorary secretary of the buildings committee, a member of the governing body and deputy president. From 1909 to 1920 he was a member of the board of studies of the National University of Ireland. Overwork precipitated an illness in the winter of 1916-17 from which he never recovered.
