Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Architect, of Dublin. Charles Dunlop, only child of Charles James Dunlop, a watchmaker from Bedfordshire, and his wife, Caroline, was born in Birmingham in 1885 or 1886.(1)  By 1901 the family had moved to Ireland, and in 1902 Charles John was apprenticed to FRANCIS CURRAN CALDBECK  FRANCIS CURRAN CALDBECK in Dublin.   On completing his apprenticeship in 1906, he joined the staff of the General Valuation and Boundary Survey as a surveyor. In 1911 he was taken into partnership by Caldbeck at 2 St Andrew Street, moving to 18 Ely Place in 1916 or 1917. Caldbeck appears to have retired soon after the move, but Dunlop continued to practise from, and apparently also to live at, 18 Ely Place until at least 1945. He probably died in that or the following year, as only a Mrs Dunlop is named at the address in Thom's Directory for 1947. He was architect to the Proby Estate.(2)

Dunlop's pupils and assistants included BASIL BOYD BARRETT BASIL BOYD BARRETT , JAMES WARDROP BUCHANAN JAMES WARDROP BUCHANAN , EDMUND LIONEL CROSBY EDMUND LIONEL CROSBY , GEORGE G. LYONS  GEORGE G. LYONS and MICHAEL SCOTT MICHAEL SCOTT . Scott remembered him as an 'extraordinary' man: 'He used to stand with his back to the fireplace with a great big Union Jack above him. I would draw away and he used to say, 'Are you a Sinn Feiner, Scott?' He wouldn't allow you to print across a line; that was another very fierce thing he had in his head. I was doing dreadful houses for him, terrible houses, or so I thought myself, but they were perhaps a bit better than others. He had a very strict idea of the type of house he wanted.'(3)
