Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Builder, architect, and measurer, of Cork. William Deane, a son of DAVID DEANE [1]  DAVID DEANE [1] and brother of ALEXANDER DEANE ALEXANDER DEANE , is listed as an architect in Haly's Cork Directory for1795, and in William West's Directory for Cork City for1809-10.(1) In 1784 he married Susanna, daughter of Captain William Jervis, at Christ Church, Cork. His impending marriage is said to have been the reason he refused the invitation of his friend Captain James Cook to join what was to be Cook's last voyage. He had six sons, the eldest of whom, DAVID DEANE [2]  DAVID DEANE [2] was also an architect. His only daughter, Sarah, married ABRAHAM HARGRAVE ABRAHAM HARGRAVE . He died on 14 January 1814 at his house on Sullivan's Quay and was buried in St Paul's Church.(2)

A manuscript copy book of bills, estimates, bills of measurement, valuations &c. kept by William Deane between 1797 and 1809 was presented to the Irish Architectural Archive by Dr Brian W.K. Fayle, of Guelph, Ontario, Canada, in 2009 (Acc. 2009/91;  a microfilm is in the National Library of Ireland.)  From this volume it appears that the greater part of Deane's work at the time was for the Collector of Revenue in Cork, Bernard Shaw, and for various Cork merchants. A number of the copied documents refer to emergency work on the Royal Magazine at Cork in the summer of 1798, following the outbreak of the rebellion, and to Deane's strenuous efforts to get paid for his labours.

Address:  Sullivan's Quay, Cork, <=1799 until death.

All information in this entry not otherwise accounted for is from the genealogical account of the Deane family in IB 43, 13 Feb 1901, 633-635, which also forms the basis of an article in The Cork Historical and Archaeological Society Journal 21 (Oct-Dec 1915), 180-186.

(2) In the article on the Deane family in IB the date of his death is given as 8 January, but in that in JCHAS as 18 Jan. The latter is evidently a misprint as Deane's death was reported in the Cork Advertiser of 15 Jan (IAA, Edward McParland files, Acc. 2008/44).
