Selected: CULLEN, THOMAS JOSEPH
| Born: 1879 |
| Died: 1947 |
Architect, of Dublin. Thomas Joseph Cullen was the eldest of the three sons of William Cullen of 10 Mountpleasant Square, Rathmines, who had a grocery business in Upper Leeson Street, and his wife Elizabeth (née Chambers). He was born on 9 December 1879 and spent the final year of his schooling, from 1896 until 1897, at Clongowes Wood College.(1) A three-year apprenticeship with JOHN LESLIE O'HANLON [1] was followed by a further three years - from January 1904 to January 1907 - as a pupil in the office of ASHLIN & amp; COLEMAN.& #160; After continuing with Ashlin & Coleman as an assistant for nearly two years, he set up his own practice at the end of 1908.(2) He had an office at 25 Suffolk Street for his entire career An early client was Matthew J. McCabe, for whom he worked on several schemes in Dublin. Later commissions tended to come mainly from public and religious bodies, for schools, hospitals and convents. In 1922 the provisional government appointed Cullen and PATRICK HARNETT MCCARTHY architects in connection with the rebuilding and reconstruction of Cork City,(3) and in 1935 Cullen was named as one of three assessors of the competition for the new building for the Department of Industry & Commerce in Kildare Street.(4)
Cullen was fully active in his profession until the day of his death, 22 January 1947. Although he is described in his obituary in JRiAI as being of 'an exceptionally retiring disposition' with his outside interests 'mainly centered on Rugby football', as a younger man he had been active in the nationalist movement and a member of the National Volunteers and the Irish Volunteers, standing as a nationalist candidate for Rathmines East Ward in the municipal elections of 1914 and 1920.(5) He was on the governing body of University College Dublin. He married Mary Kathleen Delany, the eldest daughter of Joseph Delany, building contractor of Cork, on 22 June 1921. There were six children of the marriage.
After Cullen's death his widow, a doctor by profession, and his assistant DERMOT O'DWYER ran the practice as T.J. Cullen & Co. In 1956 two of his sons, Thomas J. Cullen and Maurice B. Cullen, became partners. Two grandsons, Brian Cullen and T. Declan Cullen joined the practice in the mid 1980s. Now named Cullen Payne Architects, the practice which T.J. Cullen founded still occupies (2006) the original premises at 25 Suffolk Street.
A large collection of Cullen's designs, together with some designs produced by the practice after his death, is in the Irish Architectural Archive (Acc. 85/74). A few further designs are in Acc. 2000/40.
