Dictionary of Irish Architects 1720 - 1940

Resident engineer to the Newry Navigation Company from circa 1835 to 1858 or later. John Ramsay had responsibility for the execution of JOHN RENNIE' JOHN RENNIE' s improvements to the Newry Navigation after it had passed into private hands. Rennie, in a paper describing his improvements which was read to the Institution of Civil Engineers on 25 March 1851, acknowledged the 'great credit…due to Mr. John Ramsay, who has most ably filled the office of Resident Engineer for fifteen years, to the entire satisfaction of the Navigation Company and of the Author, as Engineer-in-Chief'.(1) In 1856 Ramsay applied successfully for the position of assistant to the Inspector of Works to the Dublin Ballast Board, but after some soul-searching decided not to leave his Newry post.(2) He had been succeeded by ROBERT REEVES TUTHILL  ROBERT REEVES TUTHILL by 1861.(3)
